The Summer Music Academies, under the direction of Dr. Scott McBride Smith, are an internationally recognized course of intensive study for young musicians

2008 Summer Music Academies

Private Lessons
Piano Academy students meet with faculty twice weekly in private lessons, focusing on technique building, refinement of interpretation, and performance preparation. Students may request study under specific teachers upon acceptance into the Piano Academy, although teacher assignments are not guaranteed.

Extra Lessons
Students may request extra private lessons. These are available, teachers’ schedule permitting, for $90 an hour.

Supporting Classes
Supporting classes are offered in music theory, conducting, composition, music history, and ear training. Each student has the opportunity to choose two classes.

Instruction
All instruction takes place in the music building (Murphy Hall) on the campus of the University of Kansas. This remodeled building includes practice rooms, classrooms, and several state-of-the-art performance spaces.

Winners' RecitalPerformance Opportunities
Students have daily opportunities to perform in student recitals, masterclasses, and studio classes. IIYM Artist-Teachers nominate students for performances. There is no limit to the number of times a student may perform, subject to time availability and IIYM approval.

Practice Rooms
Practice rooms are assigned to each student for a minimum of three hours of daily practice. Practice is required and monitored for students under the age of 18. Extra practice time is available.

Supervision
Students under the age of 18 are supervised by a staff of qualified IIYM counselors under the direction of the IIYM Director of Operations. The student to counselor ratio is 10:1. Students over the age of 18 will be excused from curfew and will not have their practice times monitored.

Student Housing
Student housing at University in Kansas is available in an on-campus dormitory. This is a short walk to the music building. Students will be housed 2 to a room. Laundry facilities, pay phones, and an arcade are available in the dormitory.
A varied schedule of group activities including physical fitness is planned. Weedend trips to movies and shopping are also organized.

Observers
Parents and teachers may attend daily student recitals free of charge. Please contact the IIYM Office if you are interested in observing other IIYM activities, subject to a $50 daily fee, tuition only. IIYM is not able to provide or arrange housing for observers.

Audition Requirement
All applicants must send in a good quality CD or DVD for acceptance into the program. The recording should contain two (2) solo pieces from contrasting style periods. Single movements of larger works are acceptable. Piano concertos are not allowed. Students applying for the Academy only should include a non-refundable $60 application fee. Students who are also applying for the competition should include a non-refundable $100 application fee ($60 academy plus $40 competition).

Summer Music Academies Auditions take place via good quality cassette, video tape, or CD.
