International Piano Competition 2007

Overview
The International Institute for Young Musicians International Piano Competition will take place July 1, 2 at the beautiful Lied of Center on Kansas, on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The competition is open to students from around the world, ages 11-19, who are attending the IIYM Summer Music Academy.

The IIYM International Piano Competition serves students, families and teachers who are passionately committed to the art of piano performance.  It is a celebration of their talents and an opportunity to gain recognition, enlarge their experience and compete for scholarships and cash prizes.

Preliminary Round (deadline April 11)
All competition applicants must send in a good-quality DVD. Please note that competition applicants only must provide a DVD. CD’s and tape recordings are not acceptable for competition applicants, though they are accepted for students applying to the Summer Music Academy and Chamber Music program.

The recording should contain two (2) solo pieces from contrasting style periods.  Single movements of larger works are acceptable. Piano concertos are not allowed.

Mark Richman, Independent Teacher, Los Angeles
William Wellborn, San Francisco Conservatory of Music

Semifinal Round (July 6, 2008)
Up to 14 semifinalists will present a program of up to 25 minutes in length.

Final Round (July 7, 2008)
Six finalists will present a program of up to 40 minutes in length.

Repertoire
Contestants should choose literature representing no less than three different style periods. Works may be repeated in successive rounds. Separate movements of larger works are acceptable. Pieces should be memorized. Piano concertos are not allowed.

Awards
First Prize:          $3,500
Second Prize:      $2,000
Third Prize:         $1,000
Audience Prize:      $500
Finalist Prize          $250 X 3
(for finalists not winning first, second or third place awards)

Eligibility
The competition is open to students born before July 1, 1996 and after July 1, 1988. Students should be enrolled in the 2007 IIYM Summer Music Academy at the University of Kansas.

Deadline & Fee
Complete the application from on Summer Music Academy application form, enclose your videotape or DVD, along with $100 application fee (includes Music Academy and Competition applications fees combined).
